Quilt: Dakota's Star The block was named for their dog - "DAKOTA"
Owners: John and Doreene Demarest 30 Old Beaver Run Road Lafayette, NJ 07848
Farm History: This farm has been in the Demarest family for more than 100 years. We believe it to be a portion of the old homestead, which was originally a land grant from the King of England - circa late 1700's. It was sold outside the family and bought back by family members in the early 1950's.
John and Doreene purchased the farm from his grandfather, Gilliyaum Demarest, Sr. - in September 1981.
Barn History:
The barn was built about 1880; its original function was for Dairy use and crop storage. Presently, part of the barn is used to store about four thousand bales of hay annually; the remainder houses beef cattle and swine.
The "L" shaped barn, is constructed of huge, hand-cut beams and large pegs. The roof has slate shingles. The barn has a fieldstone foundation and concrete floors. Sevreal small sections were added on, to put in stalls and the milk/bulk tank room for the dairy operation, it also has some cinder blocks. Architecture was determined by the function of the barn.
