Quilt: PATRIOTIC PINWHEEL QUILT BLOCK
Owners: Henry and Helen Boheim - owners since 1997 59 Beemer Church Road Branchville, NJ 07826
Barn History:
The farm dates back 150 years to the Haggerty Family. George Haggerty (b. 1881) purchased farm from his father in 1904. Dean Haggerty (his son) became owner and sold the farm in 1980's. Purchased by the Boheim's in 1997.
The original barn burned in the 1930's. The current barn is the replacement. The silo is original to the farm. The barn is constructed of cinder block and wood. Its location is close to the road, because in the early days, they brought the hay and corn in on horse-drawn wagons.
In its early days, the farm was a working dairy farm and the family was known for producing quality peaches as an additional crop. Today, the barn is used for storage of hay and bee-keeping supplies.
Making of a Barn Quilt: Helen was inspired to paint the barn quilt after hearing a presentation on barn quilts in June 2008, at the local quilter's guild meeting. Helen and her 10-year-old granddaughter, Julia Tomlinson, chose a patriotic pinwheel to display on the white barn.
They drafted a 6 foot by 6 foot pinwheel in 4 pieces. Then, armed with painter's tape and red & blue paint, attacked the quilt's design - one-quarter at a time. Their goal to finish by 4th of July was met as they finished on June 28th, 2008!
The Boheim barn quilt is the first in Sussex Co. - and will be joined by two more in the near future. For more information on the quilt guild - see the Warwick Valley Quilt Guild's website: www.wvqg.com

Dairy Barn Style:
The Boheim barn is a "Dairy barn style" - features include the gambrel roof, roof ventilators and dormers, and multiple windows. These are typical features of dairy barns built in the late 19th and early 20th century, when the dairy industry was booming. Many have attached silos.
